Now as the period of social isolation and social distance extends on, you might reach a point in life where binge-watching Netflix, Amazon Prime, face time with family and friends, chatting soon may fall off.

So what next?

The good news is there’s no better time than this lockdown to start reading the books that can help you become the best, happiest, most successful version of yourself. Remember in school, we always had that one weekly library period where we were encouraged to read books with an aim to inculcate a reading habit. Most of us at that time never took this seriously except for the few toppers in our class.

(I am sure this must be true for you also). However as time passes and we climb up the academic ladder, as a college student, it is likely that you already have a massive reading list of textbooks and reference books. We hardly find time to read for a more meaningful life.

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the top 4 personal development books every student should read. Even if you read just one of them, you’ll take away a few lessons that could stay with you for the rest of your life. These four books I firmly believe have changed my life. Maybe they’ll do the same for you.

1. You Can Win By Shiv Khera

Published in 1998, a self-help book with short interesting and engrossing stories followed by a moral. These morals make the reader believe nothing is impossible. This book guides us to develop a positive attitude, motivates us and also gives guidance to set and achieve our goal. It is full of examples of famous people like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford who have made it big in their lives in spite of hardships. The book makes us get up, go and work towards our goal. So it’s all about getting together the right recipe for success through the web of life. In all, a beautiful book which can help a person rise to any situation not just professionally but even on a personal level moreover it teaches us to become a good human being with values. Surely after reading this book your attitude and thinking will undergo a change, so ‘ You Can Win’ is a must-read for students. So sharpen your claws and get going in life.

  • My Favorite Quote from The Book

“Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently.”

2. The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that was first published in 1988. The Alchemist narrates a story of a young shepherd boy who goes on a journey and quest for treasure to realize his ‘personal legend’. Along the way, he runs into many obstacles and the journey quickly turns into an adventure. The book gives you the idea that the journey to your destiny is as important as the destination itself. The Alchemist has many lessons and nuggets of inspiration sprinkled throughout the story. The constant theme in ‘The Alchemist’ is to pursue your dreams by following what your heart desires. While playing on the notion that when you want something in life, the universe will conspire to help you reach it. Few books can forever alter your life, but this has proven to be one of them. I think this book appeals to everyone because we all have dreams and sometimes we just want someone to tell us that they may come true. Overall, ‘ The Alchemist’ is a very exciting fiction novel and it deserves a space at everyone’s bookshelf.

  • My Favorite Quote From The Book

“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.”

3. The Secret By Rhonda Byrne

The Secret published in 2006 is a self-help book based on the belief of the law of attraction which claims that thoughts can change a person’s life directly. In this book, the author unveils a ‘secret’ which she claims to have been known for centuries. The essence of the book is the power of our minds, which if identified and unleashed properly, can create waves of positive changes in our life. It deals with tuning our thought process which has the capability of making things happen; things that we otherwise would have never have imagined occurring. Everything that happens to us is directly or indirectly the doing of our own thoughts, which if modeled properly, can change everything in our lives. The book deals with the above-mentioned theory scientifically, saying that our thoughts are magnetic and a frequency is associated with each one of them and when they are sent out into the universe, they attract like objects which are reflected back to us. In short, our thoughts become things.

‘The Secret’ has been realized by many great men like Plato, Galileo, Beethoven, Edison, Carnegie, Einstein, and many other inventors, theologians, scientists, and great thinkers and this realization has gone a long way in achieving success and helping them carve a space in people’s minds and hearts, to be remembered and talked about incessantly for generations to come. The book teaches various techniques and shortcuts to understand and implement this concept in our lives. Throughout the period when I was reading the book, I was unconsciously nodding my head in approval of the theories discussed, realizing how true and appropriate each one of them is. This book changed my way of life, renewed me and taught me how to live a peaceful and contented life and be an architect of my own happiness and success. All in all, it is a must-read in order to discover oneself, understand one’s true needs and desires, improve one’s life in every possible aspect and make the most of the power which resides within oneself.

Now YOU will know The Secret… And it could change your life forever!

  • My Favorite Quotes from The Book

“ How it will happen, how the Universe will bring it to you, is not your concern or job. Allow the Universe to do it for you .”

4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

First published in 1989, is a self-help/improvement book. Covey believes that the way we see things in the world is entirely based on our own perceptions and beliefs. So In order to change something, we must change our selves and even the way we see things.

He talks about the 7 habits which are:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Habit 6: Synergize

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

In all one should read it to learn, understand and develop these habits. It helps a lot in one’s transformation and achieving goals.
